Baby quilt #473

Ok I haven't really made that many.
This is one I made for my friend Holly's baby girl. I used her nursery colors.

Wild Style

This one was a study in chaos theory. I was determined to make the black white and red "native" print work, at all costs. I tried a different pattern, which I will post here. I wish I wouldn't have used a solid red. I tried to stay away from a red print, to prevent bleeding. It's a perfect size and super cozy, even if it's a bit of an eyesore.

Princess Leah

This is the first (and so far, only) baby quilt I've made since Sol's birth. I decided that I want to embrace the whole mixing patterns thing. Beautiful Leah's mom loves yellow, so I positioned a yellow diagonal down the middle.

Happy Birthday, Luis

We liked the baby version so I went for a bigger one. It never quite worked. First of all, it was too short. Secondly, the red bled into the white. I dyed it a taupe, twice. Didn't work. It's about to become just a plain old rag. I don't love it anymore.

Joshua sleeping with Grandma's blanket

This is the blanket that my mom made Joshua for his birthday but he got early. He loves it and slept with it the first night he had it.

These are not books, lumps of lifeless paper, but minds alive on the shelves. -Gilbert Highet, writer (1906-1978)

My house is small. We have no room for more bookshelves. I'm editing my collection. I own a kindle. I use my library card.  I'm trying to downsize and simplify. But I still dream of built ins to house the buckets of books growing musty in the garage. I like my books. They keep me warm.

So, I finally finished a bookshelf quilt I had been working on for almost a year now. During my snuggie phase, I longed for the sexy librarian snuggie. A tan snuggie with a black lace overlay. Underneath would be a glorious bookshelf.  I finally got the urge to finish it after a haphazard quilting block here and there. I have more access to scraps these days. I imagine that I would make better color choices the next time around.

I'm over the whole snuggie thing. A traditional blanket is just fine. But honestly, the lace overlay with the colors of the blocks would look terrible and wouldn't make for a good throw. I opted for the dark brown satin to achieve "Sexy." It reminded me of a chocolate commercial. Kinda lame, but it is finished. I stenciled in some names of titles that live on my Kindle.

P.S.
I didn't know how to border it, so I defaulted to how the bookshelf in my living room actually looks. A Green blue wall and dark hardwood floor. I persisted with the sexy backing. It's my first batted quilt and I didn't much like it. Too silky and not long enough. I even had to add an enclosed fleece strip pocket on the back to keep my feet toasty.

I scrapped it for a flannel pattern I found out Joann's. I still haven't added the stencils. But, I like it much more.

P.P.S.
I'm not against sexy flannel. If anyone finds a nice printed flannel, lace with "flesh" colored background, let me know. It's terrible, but the the desire is true.

New quilt for the baby's arrival

Tried a different approach in two ways. I rotated the squares and used a solid for the backing. Super soft. I'll have to post the pics of the baby using it. It's a perfect size for throwing in the infant car seat.
